The Times political editor claims government may shelve plans to abolish Section 21 evictions

UPDATE (12/10/22)

No sooner than I had published this article, Liz Truss announced in PMQ’s that she would be going ahead with ‘no fault’ housing evictions.

On Monday 10th October, The Times political editor, Steven Swinford tweeted:

“Liz Truss is shelving Michael Gove’s plans to end no-fault evictions, which were due to be introduced in this Parliamentary session.

The Times has been told that they are not considered a priority & could be killed off entirely, despite being a manifesto commitment”

Landlords of student accommodation may well be able to breathe a sigh of relief if this is the case as the changes, without exemptions for student accommodation, could cause significant issues for the sector which we set out in our response to the White Paper.

The move has not been popular with tenant organisations, with Shelter stating:

“Ditching a long-promised ban on no-fault evictions would be a betrayal of England’s 11 million private renters. The prime minister has no mandate to shred manifesto commitments.”

Alicia Kennedy, tweeted on behalf of the campaign group Generation Rent:

“Totally flabbergasted. The @Conservatives  commitment to abolish evictions for no reason was made after a consultation, at a General Election, confirmed by 2 Prime Ministers at 3 Queens Speeches – if this is true it is shameful.”
