Student Discounts Are Hiding All Around You

Student Discounts Are Hiding All Around You

Can you catch them all?

Student life has its perks. Being entitled to discounts is definitely at the top of the list. From fashion to food all the way to council tax, here is how to save precious coins at University!

The Brass Tack on Tax

First things first, if you’re a student living off campus, in a shared house or private flat, be sure you apply for a council tax exemption. While full-time students have the right to live in private properties without having to pay tax at all, part-time students are eligible to discounts. You can find more information on Council Tax, on the Purple Frog website.

Cheap eats

Morrisons is the only groceries shop that offers discounts for students if you join their More for Students scheme. On the other hand, Aldi, Asda and Lidl are cheap even without discounts.

If you want to go out, lots of chain restaurants offer student discounts. Make sure you ask before you order, though!

On Fleek on the cheap

One of the newest deals in town can be found at Boots, it started as a temporary offer in 2019 where students got 10% off their basket and, as the shop’s popularity increased, the discount has now become permanent. Way to go Boots!

Superdrug, Clinique and Mac also provide a 10% discount, while the Body Shop offers 20% off.

In terms of fashion, here are the names of brands offering 10%-20% discounts: Accessorize, All Saints, Animal, ASOS, Burton, Coast, Dorothy Perkins, Dune, Fat Face, Fit Flop, Foot Asylum, French Connection, GAP, Gymshark, Hollister, Levi’s, Miss Selfridge, Missguided, New Look, Nike Store, Oasis, Office, Pretty Little Things, Public Desire, Quiksilver, Quiz, River Island, Schuh, Suit Direct, Superdry, Surfdome, Ted Baker, Timberland, Topman, Topshop, Urban Outfitters, Warehouse.

I’m not going to give you links for these – you know how Google works 😉.

Tight buns on a tight budget

If you like exercising be sure to visit your university’s gym first, the membership will be cheaper than anywhere else. If isn’t of your liking though, you should try The Gym Group, Pure Gym, or Xercise4Less, these are the cheapest gyms and they offer 9 months student memberships.

IT for the Thrifty

By no means exhaustive, electronics and digital companies love students. Not only are we comfortable with the digital world, we will take our favourite brands along with us throughout our lives.

Most of the big names have student offers, make sure you check out:

  • HP store
  • Microsoft store
  • Apple
  • EE
  • Firebox
  • 3 Mobile
  • Adobe
  • Amazon
  • Spotify

There can be 10%-30% discounts up for grabs.

Take your own popcorn

Do you fancy going to the cinema? Check out Odeon, Vue and Cineworld (just book your tickets and select student for this one – you’ll need your NUS card).

The cinema chains can offer 15-20% discounts on tickets. Some of the student-only offers only during off-peak viewings,  such as Monday to Thursday before 5pm.

Get Discount Appy

Keeping tabs on discounts might be a bit too challenging, that’s why in recent years a few apps have appeared where students can find loads of long term and special deals.

If you’re not on UNiDAYS already, you’re behind the curve. It’s full of great deals. The only thing you need is a valid student email (one that ends in ac.uk).

Another App that’s stocked with deals is Student Beans, it works in the same way and it is also free. The difference between the two of them is the range of brands featured. But, hey! Why shouldn’t we download them both and enjoy the benefits combined?

TOTUM is the third option available. It was previously known as NUS Extra and it is both a student discount card and an app. It offers a great choice of discounts for known brands; you need to become a member of TOTUM or TOTUM Pro and pay a monthly fee or you can try the free TOTUM Lite account for 12 months.

Getting access to student discounts is a real relief – making sure you’ve got extra cash as well as all the stuff you need.

It’s especially useful as we’re heading into Christmas! Happy saving everyone!
