Keeping your student property safe during the holidays

6 safety tips to ensure there’s no surprises when you come back

Purple Frog has worked with Endsleigh to give you some top tips on how to keep your student property safe over the holidays. Endsleigh works with Purple Frog to provide a level of contents insurance for you in your student property, meaning you can feel protected should the unexpected happen.

The holidays provide a welcome break and the opportunity to get away, escape back home, indulge in as much chocolate as you can manage and forget about assignments – what’s not to love?

Before you set off ready for a few weeks of relaxation, have you thought about what you’ll need to sort out before leaving your student property empty over the break?

We don’t just mean making it tidy before you leave – a high number of break-ins and thefts take place during holidays, when students’ houses are left empty.

To avoid any upset upon your return, Endsleigh has put together their top tips to make sure your property is kept safe:

1. Lock all windows and doors

It might sound obvious but spending two minutes checking all of the windows and doors have all been closed and locked properly can give you peace of mind until you get back to your student place.

2. Hide your belongings out of sight

Keep your items and your house safe by moving any expensive or important items away from the windows – if you’re not taking your laptop home for the holidays, store it away in your cupboard or drawers rather than leaving it out.

3. Unplug electricals, including chargers

Avoid any potential incidents by making sure all electrical items are unplugged – TV, DVD player, even the microwave (but not the fridge-freezer).

4. Leave a light on

Create the illusion of someone being in the property by leaving a lamp on a timer, so that it will automatically turn on at the same time each evening.

5. Don’t close all of the curtains/blinds

Nothing says ‘I’m not home’ more than having all of the curtains shut for two weeks, day and night.

6. Set an agenda with your housemates

Work out who is going to be the last to leave and the first one back in the property, so that everyone knows who will be doing the final check.

Keeping your property safe means you will be able to fully relax and enjoy your well-deserved break.
